. hello, everybody. i'm christine romans in for ashleigh banfield. the blade runner walks for now. a bombshell ruling in an announcement from pretoria. she swirms and tries to stick to her story. jodi arias. two days away from historic daytona 500 danica patrick is on a roll. oscar pistorius is getting out on bail. the blade runner will walk out of a courthouse today after days of uncertainty. his bond has been set the 1 million rand. about $100,000. he can't return to his house and must report every monday and

friday to a police station. he must avoid witnesses, surrender his passport and can't go near an airport. the magistrate took two hours to explain his position and why he doesn't consider pistorius a flight risk. >> it may not necessarily be the case that he is now committed to face 15 years imprisonment or life imprisonment. i cannot find that the accused -- i cannot find that it has been established that the accused is a flight risk or that that ground has been established that is needed to be established. >> robyn curnow is live from pretoria, south africa. tell us what happened in that courtroom today. are people happy with this bail decision? >> reporter: the one person who is happy who walked past us just a few minutes ago was his

lawyer, barry roux. nic robertson asked him are you pleased? he said yes, i am pleased. there was a strange bail proposal. he is not allowed to drink alcohol. he put it to oscar pistorius's lawyer, what about that bail condition that he's not allowed to drink alcohol. he said that's fine. oscar doesn't drink. i'm hearing in my ear that you are bringing up pictures that we showed you just a short moment ago. these are the pictures of oscar pistorius leaving the magistrate's court here in a silver land rover. the windows are tinted. you can probably see our cameraman trying to get a shot. we get a few brief seconds. oscar is in the back seat swashed in the middle. his uncle with him as he makes his way out of the pretoria traffic jam where we are. he is released from bail. he's not allowed to go to the

house where the crime took place. he has a few other houses but a get a sense from his family from speaking to them in court they're going to protect him. they aren't going to leave him alone. people are worried about his emotional state. unclear where he went in that land rover but no doubt somewhere where he is going to be safe and protected from his family. many people also today when you talk about reaction, don't forget reeva steenkamp. i think this country is very much dividing along the lines of for oscar and against oscar. many of these people behind me have been saying that this is a traf city of justice. he admitted to shooting her and he should stay in jail. this is going to be a hot topic of conversation and debate in south africa. >> when you look at those pictures of him leaving, very grim faced men and women in that car, far different from the first pictures we had of him when he was being arrested where he was hiding his face.

this is just the beginning, right, just the bail part of this. when does the trial start? >> reporter: it's the beginning of a long ordeal for oscar's family and reeva's family. the earliest, the soonest we are going to see a trial could be at least another two years until there's any sense of his fate. you talk about looking drawn. just talking to my cnn producer, diane mccarthy who was in court today. we were outside doing lives all day. she was describing he looks gaunt, withdrawn, isolated. many of the journalists and observers in court and i noticed yesterday when i was in court, he looks aged. his hair seems to be going grayer and he lost weight. we know he hasn't been eating a lot. this is a man coming to terms and the consequences of what he did on valentine's day morning.

>> thank you so much. cnn tonight conflicting evidence, tearful admissions, shocking twists. this murder case has sparked worldwide intrigue and debate. whose story do you believe? watch ac 360, blade runner, murder or mistake. a dispratt search is under way for the person or persons responsible for a shooting and a fiery six vehicle wreck yesterday on the las vegas strip. two people died inside this fire ball. one was 62-year-old cab driver michael bolden, his passenger also dead. the taxi burst into flames when it was struck by a maserati apparently fleeing from a range rover which set off a violent reaction. here's what police think happened. >> what we believe at this time is the incident began as an altercation in the area of the aria hotel. according to witness statements, shots were fired from the range

rover at the maserati. >> the maserati driver was killed. he has been identified as rapper kenneth cherry also known as kenny clutch. a passenger in his car was hurt. mike blas ski is a crime reporter with the las vegas review journal. what led up to this violent altercation. fill us in. >> reporter: thanks for me me. we don't know exactly why this started but we know where it started. it started in the val lay parking lot of the aria hotel which is right there in the center of the action. then it continued on the streets of the las vegas strip. both cars traveled north about a block where they crashed into the -- excuse me, the maserati crashed into the cab. what we're hearing now is that this las vegas rapper, kenny clutch, he also went by his real name kenny cherry, may have been

involved in a despite with another rival that morning, possibly stemming from some dispute earlier the previous evening. >> how well known was kenny cherry in las vegas? >> reporter: not really that well known, especially not for his rapping. if you look at his youtube videos, they only have a few thousand views and they don't appear very expensive. i don't think that was how he was making his money. the rumors andal gagsz are that he was making money as a pim p. that might have been at least the reason for what happened that morning. >> have police spoken with the maserati passenger? >> reporter: they have. they haven't released anything that the passenger may have told them. they're keeping everything very sensitive to the investigation private as they look for this range rover. that's been the primary focus of

the las vegas metropolitan police department this last 24 hours or so. they've wanted to get out the description of the car and put that as far as they can go. i know all the authorities in the neighboring states have been alerted and they are looking out for this range rover with the black rims and dealer plates. >> it just almost disappeared after this. a surveillance camera caught it for a moment after the crash and then it was gone. from the las vegas review journal, thank you. the huge snowstorm that buried the midwest is now headed toward new england. bus service suspended in downtown kansas city yesterday because of scenes just like that one. the city got more than a foot of snow. governs of both kansas and missouri declaring states of emergency. airports slowly getting back to normal today. this flight from denver got bogged down after landing in

i have presided over so many trials where there are so many details and all of a sudden the prosecutor gets up for cross-examination and they can't remember anything. i do understand that there are traumatic things that may cause someone to lose their memory. but her whole demeanor is different now. i will tell you i think the prosecutor is going to have a field day with her on cross-examination. i think credibility is a major point and i think the jury is going to start wondering is she telling the truth. >> what do you think about her demeanor and how it has shifted, paul? >> i think it shifted in a major way. i think back to when i was prosecutor murder cases. a lot of prosecutors when they go into a case like this, they have very little to work with, no testimony on the record or anything. he's got days and days of her testimony on the stand, her demeanor now radically shifting to someone who is tough and she's fighting back with him. >> he's pushing her. >> he's pushing her buttons because he wants to show this jury that she has a cold, hard,

calculating side that was capable of planning this murder and how convenient. you don't remember 27 stab wounds to this person that you killed? so i think he's doing a very, very good job on cross-examination. >> you talked, judge hatchet, about her credibility. he went after her about her claim that alexander broke her finger during an argument. listen to this exchange. >> put up your left hand. according to you, he kicked you and damaged your ring finger on the left hand, correct? >> yes. >> in fact, you even held it up for us, didn't you? >> yes. >> and it was crooked when you showed it to us, wasn't it? >> it's bent. >> it's bent. show us how bent it is again, ma'am. higher so we can see it sideways. ma'am, if we caused that damage on january 22nd of 2008, that would have been before this picture that we have here which

is exhibit numberer 453, five months before that. >> he's really attacking her credibility. >> he's. that's really the risk the defense p council has taken on this case. she was on the stand day after day with intricate details that i think would be hard for somebody to recall. the prosecutor has so much to work with on cross-examination. that's why the prosecution kind of took the laid back approach and not many objections as people criticized him for. i think that was part of the strategy because now she has opened the door to so much and credibility is really goes to be an issue here. >> it's interesting how juries think. sometimes you just don't predict how a jury is going to think. paul, he's really pushing her, pushing her buttons as you said. is there a risk that he comes

made a case to be released on bail. >> pistorius's troubles are far from over. his next court date is june 4 and his trial may not start until the end of the year. cnn legal krpter paul callan and georgia juvenile court glenda hatchet join me. paul, you say it is in line with american standards and standards around the world? >> here in new york city you get a trial in a murder case in less than a year and in some cases longer than that. i don't think you can criticize the south africans for how long it's going to take. >> the magistrate had very harsh words. how does that effect south africa's police system. >> i listened to this hearing that went on for almost two hours and took all these

detailed notes and he was very critical of the investigators as well as some things around the prosecution. i think that it had a big impact on his decision today, but i also think the commissioner, the police commissioner, i saw part of her interview yesterday, has a big are issue now because they've got to go back and shore up this. they've got to make sure that they have dealt with some of these concerns before trial. >> paul, were you surprised he was granted bail? people seem divided. early on it looked like the prosecution had a strong case and it looked like they would keep him in and then it unravelled. >> it looked like a strong case. i thought clearly there would be no bail when it started but by the end i new the judge would be troubled by this. one of the things i discovered did dez mond nair, he had a case about a famous rugby player who beat a cop to death. in a shocking decision he found

him guilty of culpable homicide and gave him a suspended sentence. nair is not afraid to go against the police. in the end here with all this police bum blg, i think that prior case comes to roost. he mentioned by the way the word culpable homicide giving a hint to what the future may be in this case. >> judge, what's next in terms of the investigation here? >> they have a lot of work to do. this is certainly not a clear-cut case in this case. to paul's point about homicide, the charge of homicide, there may be some hint that they will come up and say that that's self-defense because that's comparable to our self-defense here in the states. >> self-defense from what? >> he was arguing that there was an intruder and he had to shoot in the bathroom for fear of himself and others. >> in south africa can you just go and start shooting through a

door even if you think an intruder is there? >> this is sort of stand your ground on steroids. >> yes, it is. >> he have's heard from south african reporters that we have to understand the context of south africa. people live in fear in south frick, particularly wealthy people that somebody is going to come through the window and kidnap them and take their money. so there's a thought that shooting into a room is justifiable. i think it's a tough sell and reckless homicide. that's what he's facing. >> we have a long way to go before there's resolution in this. stick with me. as a homeless man sues his parents, he wants them to take out a second mortgage to buy a pizza franchise so he can get a job. it's marching to the beat of a different drum. and where beauty meets brains. it's big ideas with smaller footprints.

lawsuit against his parents. here's the kicker. kormd to the new york post he wants them to bank roll two dominos pizza franchises so he can be a success. his mom's advice? get a job! . my legal experts. this man blames his homelessness on his mother and stepfather. judge, what do you make of this? he wants them to get a mortgage on a brown stone so they can buy two franchises and break the cycle of poverty so he can have success. >> he needs a job. his mom is right. even his sister thinks his crazy. he has no basis so insist that his parents get these franchises. he needs a job. >> is there anything in here that's not frivolous? >> i'm with the judge. they're hiring at mcdonald's. i hope whenever the judge sees this case, i hope he has the

>> it's interesting. i see this as a products liability case and there have been cases in most states that allow what we term wrongful pregnancies. usually they are from vas ekt mis or tubal ligations that have gone wrong but a few involving continue sense. it is possible under these circumstances to sue. what they will be able to recover is a very different conversation in terms of damages. >> a woman in kansas city wants medical expenses, emotional distress and the cost of raising a child which we know is expensive. is it likely she'll get complication for the cost of rearing a child? >> i think a lot of women will be sympathetic to her plight. >> she can still love this child. it's just not what you planned. >> not only can you love the

child but when a jury looks at damages, suppose this kid turns out to be ail bert i know stein or a famous movie star and supports the mother for the rest of her life. where are the damages? maybe it's the best thing to happen to her. the states are reluctant to allow lawsuits for wrongful life and wrongful birth to go forward. usually the cost of the pregnancy but not saying it's bad to have a kid. >> that's what's called a blessing doctor rin where a baby, a healthy baby is a good thing. it can make life better. you point out how this child maybe will support you in your old age. this companies did issue recalls and the pills are color coded. do the users bear responsibility? >> i have been thinking about that but if you have been in the habit of taking these pills and you just kind of take them, i don't know that they bear the responsibility. actually, there was a woman and a pharmacist who actually as i understand it alerted them to the problem. i guess there are people who

older and wiser. >> older, widewiser and one of best actors of our time. this year i believe the race for best actor is the strongest. and if not for daniel day's performance as our 16th president, denzel washington could very well be taking home the oscar for best actor this year. christine. >> i have two days left. i've seen argo and silver linings play book. i want to talk about peg's best picture. what must i see in the next two days so i can make a very, very insightful commentary on monday morning? >> well, here's the thing. first of all, i would just say lock yourself in your house for at least 48 hours and just have a movie marathon. but since you can't do that, you've seen argo, silver linings play book. i believe you have to see lincoln. i thought it was really well done. i thought it was really interesting the debate about some of the accuracies or inaccuracies.

so see that for yourself. i also say see jango unchained. my three favorite were argo, silver linings play book and jando unchained. >> what's the feeling in hollywood about the best actress category? >> this is another good one. it seemed like it could have been wide open at the beginning of award season, but now we've seen jennifer lawrence win cat got area of it cfter category. she's fast becoming one of the best actresses in hollywood. she's so good and she definitely could take home the oscar on sunday night. but don't forget about jessica chastain. her performance as the cia agent, really, really good
